What Is a Problem of Practice in Education?

What Is a Problem of Practice in Education? A problem of practice in education is a real issue within an educational setting that has positive or negative side effects. The issue can also affect teaching, student outcomes, learning, or organizational performance. One main thing here is that the issue must stem from an actual problem that educators or educational leaders experience in their professional work. If we take an example of low student engagement at a particular school, it can become a problem of practice if the evidence shows that the issue is persistent and is affecting the outcomes. This concept is important in practice-focused education research, like Doctor of Education (EdD) programs. In this, the students do not study the issue only as a theoretical topic but examine a problem that exists in a real setting, understand its causes, and identify possible improvements. For example, low student engagement at any school can become a problem of practice when evidence shows that the issue is persistent and is affecting learning outcomes. What Defines an Issue as a Problem of Practice? Every difficulty in education is not known as a problem of practice. A strong problem of practice must have a clear connection to professional practice and have the potential to improve outcomes when addressed. Several characteristics usually distinguish it from a general topic. The issue should exist in a real educational setting and must be related to it It must have an impact on students’ lives or on the organization It must be supported by evidence and its possible root causes rather than relying on personal opinions It often involves several contributing factors, which means educators need to investigate what is happening before deciding how to respond. A strong problem of practice is: Relevant to the organization in a meaningful way. Observable with evidence that the issue exists. Specific to the problem rather than a broad subject. Contextual in nature Actionable and can inform improvement efforts. What Is a Problem of Practice Statement? A problem of practice statement clearly outlines the specific educational issue under investigation. It explains the following:  What is happening Where it is happening Who or what is affected Why the issue requires attention.  The statement should be written in a way that turns a general concern into a focused problem within a real context. Suppose the problem is just this:  “Students have poor reading skills” It is highlighting the problem, but it is too broad to serve as a strong problem of practice statement. The reason is just this:  It does not identify the setting It does not highlight the affected students There is no evidence related to the problem A perfect problem statement can be like this: Ninth-grade students at an ABC high school have consistently demonstrated reading proficiency below the expected standard. This has created difficulties with grade-level and their coursework and has raised concerns about their readiness for later academic work.” The exact format can vary depending on the requirements of your assignments or institution. Some EdD programs require applicants to submit a formal problem of practice statement, while others develop the statement during doctoral coursework.  What Are the Key Components of a Problem of Practice Statement? A useful statement usually provides enough information to show that the issue is real, specific, and worth investigating. A problem of practice should include the following: 1. The Problem State exactly what is going wrong or what gap exists. Do not go with broad topics like “student achievement” or “teacher retention.” 2. The Context Identify where the problem occurs, which department or educational program. 3. The Affected Group Explain who is experiencing the effects of the problem. You have to mention the concerned individuals, whoever they are. 4. Evidence of the Problem Use relevant evidence to show that the issue exists. This can include anything like the results, data, observations, etc. It depends on the situation. 5. Significance Explain why the problem should be looked upon. A strong statement clearly highlights the connection between the issue and its effects on the creation of the problem and organizational performance. Some programs also ask students to discuss contributing factors, relevant research, personal or professional connection, or possible approaches to improvement. Requirements therefore depend on the institution and purpose of the statement. Problem of Practice Example Consider a school where many ninth-grade students are failing introductory mathematics courses. A broad topic would be: Mathematics achievement among ninth-grade students A problem of practice would be: A high percentage of ninth-grade students at the school are failing introductory mathematics, with recent course and assessment data showing a persistent performance gap that may affect their ability to progress successfully through the mathematics curriculum. The second version identifies the problem and its context. However, more investigation might be needed to find out the factors contributing to the performance gap. One important thing in this is that educators should not assume the cause before investigating it. Low achievement can be linked to any problem that might be instructional practices, attendance, curriculum alignment, or several factors working together. Research is a must to identify the problems of practice to find out the root causes before selecting improvement strategies. Problem of Practice vs. Research Topic A research topic describes a broad area of interest, while a problem of practice highlights a specific issue within a professional context. The research topic leads to many different studies. The problem of practice provides a narrower starting point for investigating a real situation. A research question comes later. It asks what the researcher needs to find out about the identified problem. The problem of practice therefore provides the foundation, while the research question directs the investigation. How Can You Identify a Problem of Practice? It is simple; all you have to do is start observing an issue you regularly see in an educational setting about anything, whether it is about a drop in students’ performance, low attendance, teacher turnover, or difficulty implementing a new teaching approach. The main thing
